Gilbert, AZ- Nike’s Tournament of Champions was established in 1997 and has become the most prestigious High School girls basketball event. This year’s event was no different hosting many teams ranked in the top 25; providing us with an entertaining championship game verses the number one and number two teams in the country. NYGHoops Report was on hand for the duration of the event. The following 2016 prospects where players that we felt could play at the division one level who have yet to sign.
Angel Johnson 5’08” G/F ST Mary’s (CA)
After Watching St. Mary’s play three times during the event, it’s baffling to try and understand why this kid is not yet signed. She is the heart and soul of the number one team in the nation.
Johnson’s physical and rugged style provides a much needed edge for her team. She is an under size wing that plays very hard and does all the little things to make sure the star players get easy baskets. She is a star at her role that can score when needed. She did a great job in drive and kick situations, rebounding and defending.
Lindsey Pierre 5’09” G Miami County Day (FL)
On day one, Pierre came out blazing hot knocking down back-to-back three point shots as soon as she was inserted into the game. I got a chance to see her play a few times at TOC, She is more than just a three point specialist. She did demonstrate the ability to score in the midrange as well as attacking the basket. Her size and strength allowed her to help out rebounding and finishing with contact.
Annie McKenna 5’05” PG Trinity HS (IL)
McKenna is one of those players that you watch throughout the course of a few games and realize that she does a lot of things that can help you win games. She is an old school floor general that has a nice looking offensive game that allows her to score at all three levels. She was the most athletic player on the court, but continued to find ways to turn the corner on the offensive end and stay in front of whomever she was guarding defensively. She showed good IQ and toughness.
Precious Featherson 6’01” F Paterson Eastside HS (NJ)
Lefty forward that is over looked on a high school team that starts a 6’09’ & 6’05” prospects. She is strong off the dribble going both ways and can knock down the three-point shoots. At time she played the point for her team. If you put a taller player on her she uses her ball handling to create problems and if you put a smaller guard on her she does her damage in the paint shooting over the smaller players.
Daisa Alexander 5’08” G Southwest Dekalb HS (GA)
Alexander’s skillset and athletic abilities left me scratching my head on why she was not yet signed. She has the size you look for in a combo guard and played dependable perimeter defense during her stay at the TOC. She has a quick first step and did a good job attacking the basket with ease and under control. She was smooth and fluid with her mid range shots and dependable ball handling skills. I did not get to see her shoot from behind the arc.
Meghan Luper 5’10” W Fremont HS (NE)
Luper an athletic guard/ wing played out of position for her high school team. However she showed enough athletic ability and perimeter skills especially with her shooting from the perimeter, which extended to the three-point line. She is athletic and displayed the ability to fish at the rim.
