Oaks, PA- The Philly Expo Center served as the home for NYGHoops Report 1st ever “The Tune UP”. The event housed many of the top programs in the northeast as well as a uber talented Baylor Youth Basketball Program out of Chicago. The event gave everyone a chance to get back to the old normal, of just hooping. This article will feature some of the 2021 “Tune Up” participants, who, to date, are uncommitted.
Aneesah Marrow 6’1 W/F Baylor Basketball
Marrow beasted all weekend long at NYG The Tune Up. The combo forward used her athletic, strong frame to absorb contact and finish in and around the paint. When she needed attack from the perimeter she used her ball handling to take defenders of the dribble. In addition, she showed range behind the arc and control the paint with her rebounding prowess.
Tara Johnson 5’10 NJ Demons (East)
Johnson is a name to know. During the HS season she plays mostly off the ball but her versatility allowed her to be named to the all-state team. During The NYG Hoops’ “Tune Up” she played mostly at the point and it from that position coupled with her size one could see her true abilities. Also, she not only handles her business on the court she excels in the classroom as well securing a straight average. Look for her recruitment to pick up this year.
Khaniah Garner 6’2 F Baylor Basketball
We will keep this one short and sweet. Khaniah Garner is a hardworking, formidable, rebounding machine, a valuable rim-protector who is a dependable interior scorer. Basically, she is a walking DOUBLE-DOUBLE. Ms. Garner showed “Tune Up” coaches, fans , and players that she does not mind physical play but her ability to play an up tempo style is a tribute to her athletic ability. Lots of upside.
Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes 6’ F Books & Basketball
Ross-Barnes might be overshadowed by her front court teammates. Being on a team where there are many D1 commits can be overwhelming, but someone with her size and ability to shoot all the while remaining fluid as a “face up” player she kept catching my eye. Throughout the “Tune Up” she showed 15’-18’ range, used her handle to elude defenders and had an uncanny knack to rebound which allowed her the opportunity to start the team’s “fast break”.
Nyema Lindsey 5’9 G Philly Belles
I certainly was familiar with Lindsey going into the event, having watch her during the high school season over the years. Perhaps the biggest difference which has become an asset is her playing primarily on the ball now. Lindsey is a super athlete, competitor and vocal on the court. Look for her recruitment to get rolling once the season starts.
Sydney Lusher 5’11 W Syracuse Royals
Lusher may have been one of the biggest surprises to me. She usually plays the point during the HS season, which explains her excellent feel for the game. But, she caught my eye the very first game at the event, playing against a very talented Baylor Youth basketball Program team Syd’s smooth stroke and versatile game was on display throughout the “Tune Up”. Her size as a point guard is an bonus as she is able to get the ball to teammates in scoring positions despite a great deal of defensive pressure.
Natalie Pence 5’9 W Empire State Blue Flames
Pence helped her team finish 4-0 at the NYG Hoops’ “Tune-Up”. While no one officially kept stats, she is one of those stat sheet stuffers. The versatile sharpshooting lefty WG, is a dependable ball handler that has a very nice basketball IQ and a real threat from beyond 3-point line. She is like the Draymond Green for the Empire team.
Denae Carter 6’ W Books & Basketball
Carter played with an extremely unselfish manner which ignited the team’s success. As a Multi-dimensional prospect that check multiple boxes she uses her size, skillset, athleticism & shooting touch to create mismatches for opposing teams.
Keva Wilson 5’11 F Baylor Basketball
Laycee Drake 5’8 G Alpha Tier Athletics
Kyierah Toney 6’2 iExcel
Janel Moore 5’6 iExcel
Emma Bruen 5’8 G Jersey Cardinals / Sharp
Ayasha Thomas 5’5 PG Imhotep Charter
Katie Whitaker 6’4 P Syracuse Royals
Jaelyn Vleer-Elliott 6’1 F Syracuse Royals
Caitlyn OBoyle 6’2 NY Extreme
Liz Lofaro 5’9 NY Extreme
