Paterson, NJ- On the last weekend of the July evaluation period, NYG Hoops presented a first-year event “The Show”. The Show was the only team event in the greater New York area and it housed many future scholarship collegiate athletes. This write up will focus on some of the top performers at the event that have not signed or committed.
Maeve Donnelly 6’04 F (2019) BNY Select
Coming into the summer Donnelly was already projected as a D1 prospect with many scholarships offers from a variety of Mid Major programs. The southpaw has good size, long arms and a strong skill set foundation for her size. She already shows early touch, not just around the rim, but facing the basket comfortably from the free throw line. On the defensive end, she eliminated put back opportunities as she did a good job using her size to protect the rim.
Logan Thayne 6’01 F (2020) NY Havoc 2020 Silver
Thayne is a classic late bloomer who should begin to emerge at a rapid rate this fall/winter. Thayne knows how to use her size and frame in the paint. She showed some mobility heading north south with the ball in her hands and was deadly from behind the arc with her feet set.
Caileigh Walsh 6’03 F (2021) NJ Sparks 16U EYBL
Her physical tools command attention from the very highest levels at this point. Her future as a runner, rebounder, defender, and finisher is very bright. If she closes the gap with her skill set and understanding of the game, then her ceiling could be extremely high.
Lashae Dwyer 5’06 PG (2021) NJ Sparks 16U EYBL
Explosive, athlete and dynamic playmaker is the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of her performance at the event on Sunday. Every time I have watched her play she has improved and I am sure she will continue to do so.
Melanie Hoyt 6’02 F (20210 NY Havoc 2020 Silver)
First thing that jumps out at you is her size and frame. As the action picked up on Saturday it was not hard to tell she would be a name to remember. She played both facing up and with her back to the basket. She also displayed the ability to shoot with ease from 15 feet as well as finish around the rim using either hand.
Janelle Brown 5’05 PG (2020) LI Renegades Blue
Brown is a small productive guard who has great explosion to the rim and very good command of the basketball. Very efficient player that can fill up the stat sheets with points and steals. She does a great job getting in the lane and finishing over taller players with authority and creativity. Tough kid who will play through contact.
Fredrayah Heyward 5’08 G Team Heat / Lightning 16u
Heyward has a mature body and floor game. She's well-built with a solid skill set and good shooting stroke from three. She's versatile and was engaged on both ends of the floor with the ability to play and defend multiple positions.
Tania Maxwell 5’03 PG (2022) ML Gators
Advanced young floor general who has not played one high school game. However, during her play at The Show, you would not be able to tell she is a month removed from Junior High. Maxwell is not flashy but what catches you’re her eye is her quickness and decision making combined with her ability to make timely three pointers if left open at such a young age.
Cach’e Wilson 5’05 PG (2020) MD Lady Tigers 2020
Has a toughness about her when she is running the team. Really tough with the ball when attacking off the dribble and in the open court. Provided a good balance of scoring and distributing the ball.
Lexi Brooks 5’10 G (2020) BNY Select
From the beginning of the summer circuit to end, this kid has shot up the recruiting charts. Brooks did not disappoint at NYG The Show, usually playing off the ball the previous time I saw her. She primarily played the point for her team at this event. Her size, strength, athletic ability and shooting touch will make her a name to remember.
