For the past five years the Winter Classic has been a staple to open the girls basketball season for the NYGHoops Report. This year we had a chance to make it to the event on Sunday which was the last day of the event.
Danielle Patterson 6’03” W/F (Mary Louis Academy, Queens NY 2017)
Patterson is a household name on the national circuit. However the local product was by far the most talented and productive star at the event during my time there. Patterson did most of her damage playing with her back to the basket or around the basket using good footwork and agility. In her team’s lone game at the event she finished with 25 points guiding her team to a victory versus a talented PSAL Curtis team.
Chanell Williams 5’03 PG (Monsignor Scanlan HS, Bronx NY 2017)
Williams is a transfer student, and this will be her first year in the Catholic school league. The speedy junior lead played fast and provided some leadership, saw the floor well and created for teammates she finished with 8 points, 6 Assists and 4 steals.
Rayshel Brown 5’07” PG (Curtis HS, Staten Island, NY 2017)
Strong combo guard that loves attacking the basket, Brown did a good job not over penetrating and using mid range pull-ups. Brown showed toughness which allowed her to rebound and defend against bigger and taller players. Brown finished with 14 points against a very stingy Mary Louis Academy defensive minded team.
Sarah Edmonds 5’09” G (ST Anthony’s HS, Long Island NY 2016)
The Howard University signee, had a great showing in her teams first game of the year. Edmonds has always relied on her athletic ability to attack the basket, but in the first game of her senior year it was her jump shot that served her well connecting on multiple mid range jumpers and three pointers. Edmonds finished with 18 points in a victory against Monsignor Scanlan.
Brianna Connor 5’06 G (Moore Catholic HS, Staten Island NY 2016
Connor’s is a point guard with a nice first step who played very aggressive on both ends of the floor. She displayed enough strength and speed to continuously get to the rim, playing bigger than her listed size. She has not yet committed.
Morgan Stabb 6’00 F (Kellenberg HS, Uniondale NY 2017)
Stabb is a true throwback type player that did a bit of everything. She caught the ball naturally in traffic showing the ability to finish with both hands around the basket. Her stroke looked fluid and natural from12-15 feet. She showed good patients in executing her post moves and did a good job passing the ball and rebounding.
