You love to hear the story of the late bloomer and specially when it has a Cinderella like ending. Meet Olivia Medford, a 5 foot 11 senior (2021) wing of LUHI who during the quarantine of 2020 has transformed her game into a scholarship worthy prospect. Sadly, due to Covid19 college coaches have not had a chance to see her play live in almost a year. Medford started her prep career at her local public high school (South Side H.S.) in Nassau County. During her time at South Side H.S. She lettered in JV football, lacrosse & basketball. After her sophomore season at the Rockville Centre high school she decided to focus on basketball. In consultation with her family she decided to “take her talents” to national power Long Island Lutheran (Brookville, NY) for her junior season. While at the nationally ranked program she averaged around 5 mins per game as the Crusaders finished the season with a 20-1 record.
NYGHoops Report got a chance to ask her few questions.
NYGHR: “Tell us about the improvements you made to your game over the past year?”
OM: “Well I’ve been developing my guard skills, working on my shot, and getting faster”
NYGHR: “Ok, so what does a typical training day look like?”
OM: “Typically during the week I practice in the gym with our school coaches on Mondays and Wednesdays developing all facets of my game. Then Tuesdays and Thursdays I do strength and conditioning where I work on agility and all around strength. Also during the week I try to get to the gym after practice whenever I can to get shots up and work on guard moves. Then during the weekends I get shots up for about an hour and than I play some of the people the gym.”
I, like the rest of the basketball community, am not sure if the State of New York will have a high school season, but I am pretty sure that Medford will be ready and she will prove that she will be an asset to any team looking for a hard multi skilled hard working combo forward.
Olivia has pledged to keep us in the loop far as her recruiting is concerned and we fully expect to hear from her on a weekly basis.
