Here are some of the top performers from Lightning Team-Miller May Madness:
Kaela Kinder 5’11” NY (W) NYC Heat 2016
It never gets old watching her play. It seems like the better the competition is, the better she performs. Kinder’s versatility allowed her to defend 1-4. Kaela has great size and length that can certainly be effective at the next level. She looked a lot more confident on the offensive end at May Madness.
Van-Ness was for sure one of the highlights of my weekend. She was a terror in transition by scoring and collecting offensive rebounds, and giving the opponent problems in the two games I saw. She made a case to be one of the top players in 2017 class at the event. Melody showed superior athletic ability, range on her shot, and played on both ends of the court while rebounding like a frontcourt player.
Channell Williams 5’02” (PG) NY Belles 2017
Some players are blessed with size, while some are blessed with the heart of a lion. Whatever she lacked in size she made up for it with her desire to play the game. Williams demonstrated a good feel for the game; dropping dimes, using change pace moves & continuously scoring within the arc.
Jada Lucas 5’05” (G) CT New Heights 2017
Lucas will have to be a PG at the next level. But on her U15 team she played the role of a scorer. If she continues to works on her shot selection and her ability to balance scoring and distributing, she will for sure be a player that the college coaches will have to keep an eye on.
Nyasia Thomas 5’09” (G) NJ Lightning Miller U15 2017
Thomas’s much improved shooting touch provided spacing for her team as she knocked down a few three balls during the weekend event. The slashing, athletic wing was not asked to handle the ball much, but as she continues to develop those skills her stock will continue to rise. Nyasia continuously found ways to come up with steals by playing the passing lanes and was heavily involved in her team’s rebounding.
Nukiya Mayo 6’03” (W/F) NY Belles 2016
Mayo looked scary when she was slashing into the lane, using her size to get shots off over defenders. She showed range that extended to the three-point line, handled the ball effectively, and blocked shots on the defensive end. As she continues to add bulk to her slender frame she will be a prospect that will garner many scholarship offers this summer.
