Bronx, NY – In the past 9 months many things have changed in NYC due to COVID19. However, one thing that has not changed is South Shore Lady Vikings winning championships. In the past five years they have won 4 consecutive PSAL/State championships. Coming into last night’s championship game at New York Gauchos Roundball, it would be safe to assume this would be a rebuilding year for South Shore. The Lady Vikings, who lost ten seniors from last year’s team have many new faces in the rotation.
Last night’s championship game may go down as an instant classic. South Shore High School used a last-minute rally to snatch the game from Immaculate Conception (NJ) 51-50. They were down by six points with 40 seconds to play. Instead of panicking they exhibited championship behavior by turning up their defensive pressure and forced consecutive turnover which they turned into quick buckets. With 40 seconds to play in the game Sophomore Breanna Jackson (2023) started the rally knocking down a three pointer, followed by freshman Ariel little (2024) coming up with big steal and a layup with 31 seconds remaining in the game. UMass bound Damoni Tucker (2021) steped to the line with 8 seconds remaining in the game and knocked down both free throws giving South Shore a 50-49 lead that it never surrendered. When asked what was he thinking down as much as eight with two minutes left in the game South Shore HC Anwar Gladden responded “We’ve been down before, in the quarter to TMLA and we came back; Breanna Jackson is one of our shooter, when she hit that shot it got us going.”
