Brooklyn has long been a breeding ground for tough, talented basketball players, and Grand Street Campus’ own Nevaeh Spencer is no exception. A 5-foot-8 senior guard, Spencer has made her mark as a four-year varsity player, showcasing her ability to score, defend, and lead.
During her senior season, Spencer averaged 15 points, 2 assists, and 2 rebounds per game, while shooting an impressive 81% from the free-throw line. Her ability to create off the dribble, coupled with a smooth mid-range game, has made her a tough cover for defenders across New York City.
A Journey Rooted in Friendship
Unlike many players who grow up with a basketball in their hands, Spencer’s journey to the game was somewhat unexpected.
“I started playing basketball in the 6th grade because of one of my best friends. She was into basketball, so I would play with her sometimes—not really thinking much of it until she brought it to my attention that I was actually kinda good. I also had a natural handle.”
That natural ability quickly turned into a passion, leading Spencer to Grand Street Campus, where she became a key piece of the program. Over four years, she developed into a leader and a competitor who thrives under pressure.
Coach’s Perspective
Grand Street Campus head coach Corey McFarlen has had a front-row seat to Spencer’s growth and impact on the program.
“Nevaeh is an elite defensive player that takes pride in being disruptive on the floor. Her ability to create off the dribble and score in the mid-range is reminiscent of some of the better guards to come through Grand Street. Nevaeh is usually at her best when her best is required.”
McFarlen also praised Spencer’s work ethic, calling her a “true gym rat” who has worked tirelessly to become one of the top guards in her class.
“I am most proud of how Nevaeh approaches challenges and adverse situations by holding herself accountable.”
What’s Next?
As an unsigned senior, Spencer is still looking for the right college fit—one that will challenge her both on and off the court.
“I’m looking to go away for college, somewhere somewhat small. I’m also looking for a school that has strong academic support and a coaching staff that cares for their players enough to help us become our best selves. Can’t forget the level of competition and the environment. I just want to put myself in a space where I can grow on and off the court.”
In addition to basketball, Spencer has an interest in majoring in business, further proving that she’s thinking beyond the game and planning for her future.
A Player Worth Watching
With her combination of defensive tenacity, scoring ability, and leadership, Spencer has all the tools to succeed at the next level. Any program looking for a hardworking, versatile guard should take a close look at what she brings to the table.
As she continues her search for the right fit, one thing is certain: Nevaeh Spencer is ready to take the next
