Detroit, MI- Delighted to say I enjoyed a great weekend of snow and basketball at the 7th Annual Best of Michigan. Being that the state of Michigan does not allow their high school teams to travel out of state, this has become a pivotal event for recruiting and national recognition. NYGHoops Report was on hand to take in the action. These are some of the top freshmen that attended and that I was able to see at the event:
Fab Freshmen
Cameren Williams 6’02 F Whitney Young HS 2020
Good motor, length, strength and athleticism that all project to the next level. Williams has a nose for rebounding and her presence alone prevents put backs under the rim. Williams was impressive with her foot work and ability to finish with contact. Although the rebound count is unofficial it’s easy to say she finished with two double-doubles at the event while coming off the bench.
Daija Tyson 5’04 PG Detroit Edison HS 2020
Another freshman with a bright future. In the one game she played at the event she got hurt late in the 4th quarter, however, the impression left in the first three quarters was good enough. Tyson is as smooth as it gets with yo-yo handles, drive and dishes and tear drops. She played fast and finished at the rim over bigger players.
Jasmine Clerkley 5’11 Okemos 2020
Clerkley did not play her best basketball at this event in terms of scoring. Nevertheless, you can see she was not a typical freshman. Her level of physicality jumps right out at you. Clerkley did a good job using her strength to finish around the rim over bigger & older players. A good rebounder for her size, she showed some ball handling skills that allowed her to attack.
Gabrielle Elliot 5’10 W Detroit Edison HS 2020
Easiest way to describe her game is production. During her team’s two games at the event she played all five positions at some point. Elliot’s skill set and active style allowed her to take over games at times with more than just her scoring. She provided both interior and perimeter defense by blocking shots, rebounding, diving on the floor for loose balls and doing a good job playing the passing lanes.
Whitney Sollom 6’02 F Hartland HS 2020
Nice size forward prospect that did a great job catching the ball in traffic. Can drive with 2 or 3 dribbles. She is nimble on her feet, has good understanding of game, and is a shot blocker that finishes at rim.
Cameron Grant 6’01 F Macomb Dakota HS
Shaulana Wagner 5’06 PG Detroit Edison HS
Makaila Ziegler-Griggs 6’00 W Wayne Memorial HS
Kenzie Lewis 5’10 G Williamston
Whitney Sollom 6’02 Hartland HS
