What was the experience like in Colorado Springs, CO?
Prior to arriving to Colorado Springs, I knew I had to be prepared for the climate change. My mother constantly told me to drink water because of the humidity there. However, it is a very beautiful city and state. In regard to the trials, once I got there I was excited to play against some of the top players in the country. The USA training center was absolutely amazing, it was an honor to play in the same gym as Tamika Catchings, Maya Moore, Diana Turasi, Sue Bird and so many other great players. This experience gave me the opportunity to challenge my skills and to grow and mature as a player. I’m forever grateful for and will cherish it for a lifetime.
What was some of the major differences in AAU, HS and ASAB ?
All three emphasize the importance of being a team player and leader on and off the court.
HS- Prior to officially starting my High School career, I was able to practice with the varsity team since the 3
rd grade because I had two older sisters who played. I was the manager in 6
th grade as well. Therefore, I learned a lot of valuable lessons before I was actually playing on the varsity team. Coach Catapano stresses leadership and defense as two major keys in the Baldwin program. Although our league games aren’t as competitive, Coach Cat makes sure he schedules tough non-league games to challenge our team. Every time I’m about to defend, I always hear Coach Cat’s voice saying “defense wins championships.”
AAU- I play for Iexcel with Coach Walter Welsh I’m able to compete against some of the top teams throughout the country at several different exposure tournaments. Coach Walt emphasizes the ability to communicate and the importance of being a leader. He demands that we “never allow anyone to determine our worth” and to not just be great ball players but great students in the classroom.
USAB- I was able to play against and with the best girls in my age group in the country. It was a difference experience because we were constantly competing and showcasing our individual talents.
What lesson did you learn from the coaches at USAB Trials?
During the scrimmages, my two main coaches were Natalie Williams and Trenia Tillis Hoard. They were very encouraging and they taught me different learning strategies I can apply to my game. I really enjoyed having them as my court coaches. We had group sessions in a classroom to review beneficial techniques that are necessary when playing basketball. For example, the concept of putting your team before yourself. I learned that selfish attitudes can limit your game, and not help your team become successful. Another important factor is understanding your own individual roles and capabilities as a player. However, the most important tool I learned was leadership. As a point guard, it is imperative that I have the ability to lead my team. In order to do so, I must communicate with my team throughout the entire game/practice.
What was your favorite moment and why?
My favorite moment was during the group sessions. I was able to meet with a lot of talented and amazing girls across the nation. I realized that we were all focused on learning from the USAB trials and developing into better basketball players. However, obviously we all shared the same goal of making the USA team.
What is more important honing your physical skills or improving the mental aspect?
I would say improving my mental aspect is more valuable rather than your physical skills. For example, throughout my years of playing basketball I felt like I wanted to adapt a more aggressive mentality on offense and defense. With this type of mentality, it can lead to me becoming more successful and also benefiting my team. Confidence is also a major attribute to the game. I love to watch NBA guards like Kyrie Irving, John Wall and Steph Curry because they play with a confidence swagger throughout the whole game.
What schools are recruiting you? Have you visited and hold offers from?
I’m being recruited and have offers from schools in the ACC, SEC, A10, Big East, Big 10, Pac 12 and the AEC. I am blessed to have the interests and offers from these schools.
Thank you USA Basketball, for giving me the opportunity to compete in the trials, and thank you NYG Hoops for allowing me to share it with you all.
