Miami, FL- Last week I got a chance to visit Miami and attended The 2016 Junior Orange Bowl Basketball classic at Palmetto H.S. The 8 team event hosted teams from New York, Alabama, Illinois, Florida and South Carolina. After a demanding three days of play Long Island Lutheran would be crowed the Champion by defeating a 10-4 Talented Nova HS (FL).
NYGHops Report was on hand Thursday to catch al of the second-round action.
Celeste Taylor 5’10 G Long Island Lutheran 2019
Known for her athletic ability, this was somewhat of a coming out party. Being named the MVP of the classic. She was very efficient in her scoring and shot selection. The smooth perimeter prospect manufactured offense and provided a leadership role on a young team. She scored at all three levels and provided menacing defensive presence.
D’asia Gregg 6’03 Wilson HS F/P (SC) 2018
Could not believe she was 6 foot 3 until I walked up to her. At that height, she could keep up with the guards. Agile post that showed the ability to play facing the basket as well as with her back to the basket. Showed some range on her shot connecting on a three-pointer and a few other shots facing the basket.
Cheyanne Danniels 6’04 F/P Ferguson 2019
Tons of long term potential, already looks the part. Rim runner that is fluid in moving around the rim, showed her ability to finish using both hands around the rim. Facing the rim a one, two dribble attack and finish approach. Good hands, showed toughness around the basket, rebounded, did not shy away from contact and protected the basket.
Grace Stone 5’10 G Long Island Lutheran 2018
Handles the point guard position for a very talented LUHI team. Sized and savvy serves her well, protects the ball and gets scorers the ball in their spots. Stone showed the ability to balance the responsibility of distributor while still being able to pick her spots as scorer. She is under appreciated as defender, and rebounder. She’s one of those players that always seems to be around the action, our hockey assist away.
Taylor Henderson 5’11 PG/G Center HS (AL) 2019
Smooth lead guard that made a living in isolation situations. Loved the hesitation dribble, finished strong at the rim, and posted up verses smaller players. Scorers mentality, passes with purpose, confident in abilities and showed good court awareness.
Erin Guetierrez 5’09 G Nova HS (FL) 2018
Loved watching her attack the rim with reckless abandon. She showed her capability to score consistently beating her defender off the bounce and finished with contact.
Amani Free 5’11 W Long Island Lutheran 2018
One word to explain this kid is winner.. On a very talented LUHI team it very difficult for everyone to stand out. But Free has created a Draymond Green type role, no true position to whatever the team needs type. At times, she guarded 2-5, battled on the boards, outlet passes, assisted on baskets. While still creating scoring opportunities for herself. She was preconized as an All-Tournament.
Bryanna Goodson 5’09 G Wilson HS (SC) 2017
Long lean guard with play making ability, moved well without the ball. Made a living on her jumper and specially from mid-range she is headed to College of Charleston next year.
