Schenectady, NY- Empire State Takeover hosted the 2nd annual Upstate Elite Showcase this past Sunday at the Pat Riley Sports Center at Schenectady HS. NYGHoops Report was on hand to cover the camp/open run. These where some of the standouts form the event:
Grace Heeps 5’11 G East Greenbush NY 2019
Solidly-built two guard with offers from A-10 & MAAC schools primarily played on the ball at this event. She did an effective job distributing the ball to teammates and running the team. Vocal in communicating with teammates on both ends, Heeps played more like a QB at this event with her facilitating.
Sarah Mattfeld 5’08 Guard Voorheesville NY 2021
Mattfeld is a good size guard with a scorer’s mentality. She scored a ton in transition and attacked the basket off the bounce. She also showed the ability to connect on the three-point shot form in catch and shoot situations.
Jenna Zimmerman 6’02 Wing Adams, NY 2018
Zimmerman is a long & lean guard/wing with good skill sets. She looked more comfortable playing on the perimeter facing the basket. She ran the floor well & finished at a high rate, but what also stood out was the consistent stroke form beyond the arc.
Kaia Henderson 5’04 PG New Harford, NY 2022
Henderson is a smoot, young PG that has the it factor. She handles and keeps her cool under pressure. She did a good job pushing the ball, keeping her head up, screening and creating offense.
Ava Learn 6’00 W/F Hyde Park, NY 2021
Learn has the D1 look as a junior high player. If not for the packet you would easily mistake her for a junior or sophomore. She showed face up game, a mid-range jumper with a nice first step, and also displayed the ability to knock down threes. She did a fairly good job rebounding vs. older players.
Emmalee Morgan 6’00 W/F Poestenkill, NY
From last spring to early October, Morgan has transformed her game for a back-to-the-basket player to an inside-outside player. She showed the ability to consistently hit the three-point shot, while not losing the physical approach needed to battle in the lane area. She catches the ball well in traffic and showed the ability to finish with contact.
Mikyla Mitchell 5’05 PG Scotia, NY 2020
Whatever she lacked in height Mikyla made up with her athletic ability and natural strength. She is an effortless ball handler that plays at another speed with the ball in her hands and is faster than whomever is guarding her. She showed the ability to get into the lane at will. As she continues to grow into the position she will be one to keep an eye on.
Emma Carter 5’10 Guard Bristol, VT 2018
Marina Maerkl 6’00 W/F Binghamton, NY 2019
Camryn McHale 5’02 PG Rensselaer NY 2019
Shyla Sanford 5’08 G Latham NY 2018
Ashley Starzyk 6’03 F Pine Plains 2017
Elizabeth Thompson 6’00 F Morris NY 2019
Sara Fields 6’03F Durhamville NY 2017
