Bronx, NY- The 8
th Annual Lady Choz Mecca H.S. Challenge, was a huge success! The motivation behind scholastic events are to provide competitive games in addition to exposure for the partaking high school prospects. The Mecca did just that, with coaches attending from the following conferences SEC, ACC, AAC, NEC, MAAC, Big Ten, Big East, MEAC, Big South, American East & Southern Conference. The 2018 Mecca hosted teams from NY, NJ, CT, FL, NC, MA, VA, PA & Canada. NYGHoops Report was on hand to cover the event from start to finish. This write up will focus on unsigned seniors that I feel can help a four-year college.
Unsigned Senior
Destiny Samuel 6’02 F Baldwin HS, NY
Long, active, athletic forward that mostly played facing the rim. She was at her best when she was running the floor. Did not shy away from contact, her best basketball may be ahead of her. Her production was more of the intangibles than actual stat line. For sure a D1 prospect.
Deasia Stevenson 5’05 PG Capital Prep, CT
The Mecca was not her best showing in NYC. However, I’ve seen this prospect maybe 5 times already this season. Confident lead guard with smooth floor game, has range out to the arc. She can drive to score or to dish. Has plenty of ball handling and quicks. Under recruited because of minimal AAU.
Asainae Johnson 5’08 PG Grand Street Campus, NY Pictured
Smooth combo-guard with an explosive first step, good one on one break down ability. Not much of a three-point shooter. She is more of a scorer that shows the ability to score attacking the rim from 10 to 15 feet. Also brings the element of taking acrobatic shots.
Jasmine Johnson 6’02 F South Shore HS, NY
Agile low post performer, offensively more of a face up player that shows touch from 10 to 15 feet. Not much of a leaping shot blocker but difficult to get shots off verses her in one on one. Plays stronger that her frame indicates. Played behind Brianna Frazier (Maryland) & Salina Philoxy (Seton Hall) for her first three years of HS. She has also played multiple sports during HS Career.
Lauren Hackett 5’05 PG ST Anthony’s HS, NY
Lefty, floor general that was a one-time LIU commit. Poised game manager with some scoring punch. Deceptive with the ball in hands, handles and distributes with confidence and nice stroke to the arc.
Alexa Wallace 5’08 G Half Hollow Hills East, NY
Another Long Island secret, confident guard pushes tempo, stays a step ahead of defender. Has range to the arc, drives to score but equally as effective driving and dishing. Plays passing lane which converts to points. Smooth off the bounce, slices through defenses.
Lakeisha Officer 6’00 F Grand Street Campus, NY
Physical, skilled interior forward with good hands active on the glass. Brings some ball handling with range that extends to the three-point line. Trails in transition, makes good decisions with ball in hand not selfish player. Needs better conditioning.
