7th Annual Best of Michigan
Detroit, MI- The 7th Annual Best of Michigan Showcased many of the Midwest best prospects in one building. NYGHoops Report was on hand for most the event. However, I did see the first game of the event in Southfield A&T/ Henry Ford Academy. I selected the following five players as my All-Tournament team.
Starting 5
Destiny Pitts 6’0” W Detroit Country Day 2017 (Minnesota)
In Pitts lone game at the event she left no doubt in anyone’s mind of her abilities. She posted an efficient 50 point performance, which happened to be a career high. Pitts shooting touch extends to behind the arc, but she is just more than a shooter. She demonstrated the capacity to operated off the bounce and posses the strength to finish with contact over taller players.
Zia Cooke 5’9” G Rogers HS 2019
Watching Cooke play alone made it worth the trip to the mid-west. She finished with 27 of her teams 59 points, most importantly in a close victory. She understands how to create as well how to draw fouls. Zia displayed very good body control, change of speed, and ability to serve as scorer or distributor.
Alyza Winston 5’6” Mona Shores Sailors 2019
Not sure the guard position she played but was left mesmerized with her athletic ability. All the tools you look for in a big time guard are there. The slashing guard has multiple speeds, one of which is fast and for sure the other is faster. Showed the ability to knock down the three-point shot. Finishes at a high percentage in traffic, scorer that finds her way to the basket. Producer. Scored 21 in her lone game at the event, keep in mind she shares the back court with a senior D1 signee.
Rickea Jackson 6’3” Detroit Edison HS 2019
On a team with a least four D1 players it should be hard to stand out. But Jackson defies that conventional wisdom, her ability to operate both in the interior and the perimeter combines with her 6 foot 3 frame makes her an asset. She finished with 18 points in her team’s first game vs Whitney Young in less than 3 quarters. In her team’s second victory at the event, which ended be a breeze she had less impressive stats.
Breann Beck 5’8” PG Whitney Young 2018
Among the elite lead-guards at the holiday showcase this past weekend. She used her superb ball handling to break down defenders and found her way to the rim with regularity. Her ability to find teammates for open baskets was facilitated by Whitney Young’s offense throughout the weekend.
