Recruiting never stops, as information pours in about prospects all throughout the year. Even during quarantine, college coaches are gathering and assembling information on 2021-25 class prospects. Yet, during the recruitng cycle, we'll often hear or see a prospect at a camp or event that we've never heard of.
In this reading, I will introduce you to the most undervalued prospect in NYC this past season. Khya Hough (2021), a 5'6 junior point guard - plays for The Mary Louis Academy (TMLA) based out of Queens, NY. Going into the season, TMLA wasn't selected to win many games after losing two of their returning leading scorers; due to the injuries by senior Kate Hughes (2020) and Super Sophomore Breauna Ware (2022). NYGHR got a chance to speak to the rising senior guard through her Empire State Blue Flames Director Nick Volchok. When asked about this past season, Hough said: "I've had many memorable moments amongst my teammates and me. Each one being a game where we fought with everything we had, whether the outcome was a win or a loss; Our first game of the season we beat Monsignor Scanlan in a tough battle that resulted in a one-point win in overtime." She continues saying, " loosing two essential pieces to the team before our first game, my teammates showed me their heart and determination to start the season outright."
During her freshman and sophomore years, Hough's primary role was to be a pass-first PG. She played with many of NY top players in AAU and during the HS season. She had to take matters into her own hands this past season- carrying her TMLA team to the Quarterfinals of the CHSAA City Playoff's while leading the league in scoring averaging 23 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assist and 3 steals. When asked what she will be working on this summer for next season. She replied "physically getting stronger each year and mentally learning about the game more and more as a student of the game. Each year I have excelled in my game and in my upcoming season for my senior year, I am determined to leave with a championship."
The Harlem native reminds me of a young Corin "Tiny" Adams. She has been in contact with several college coaches from Central Connecticut, Stetson University, Sacred Heart, St. Bonaventure and LIU Brooklyn and currently holds and offer from LIU.
