The state of New Jersey gets it share of attention when it comes to the national girls’ basketball scene. The 5’9, rising sophomore Zoe Brooks of Trenton Catholic Academy is doing her part to keep the state on the map. In recent years TCA has produced some of the state’s top PG prospect in Jasmyra Saunders (2007), La’Kaisha Sutton (2008), Briyonna Canty (2011) & Maniya Custis (2020). The Plainfield, NJ resident capped off a spectaculars first season and is on track to having her name one day mentioned with the Trenton Catholic Academy G.O.A.T.S. NYGHR got a chance to speak to the talented PG.
When asked how she first got started hooping she said “(her) brother, Jalen. He is five years older than me so whenever my dad would train Jalen, I would go out there and he would show me stuff, too. Also, my dad was one of the coaches on my brother’s AAU team, Sports U, when he was in 7th grade. I would go to all of the practices and games. Nazi Reid (Minnesota Timberwolves), Louis King (Detroit Pistons), Luther Muhammad (Arizona State) and Jahvon Quinerly (University of Alabama) were all on his team.”
Brooks who served at TCA 6th man during her first HS season (28-1). Averaged 14 points, 4 steals, 4 assists and 3 rebounds per night and was named 2
nd Team All State performer for her efforts. She Currently holds 15 offers and received her fist offer in 7
th grade from the Seton Hall staff. Brooks has already visited Seton Hall, St. Johns, Rutgers, UCLA. She has also attended camps at Maryland, Seton Hall, Manhattan, Fordham and Princeton.
When asked about the impression each school left with her; “My favorite unofficial visit was to UCLA. Coach Cori Close and the staff made me feel really comfortable. Each player on the team introduced themselves to me and I walked around the campus.”
She also mentioned St. Johns; “St. John’s with coach Joe Tartamella. He’s funny.”
She is weighing all her options early when it comes to things like location; “Also, I live less than 15 minutes away from Rutgers, so I’ve been on campus a bunch of times.”
When asked about her high school goals; “I have some big goals for myself in high school. I want to win the TOC at least twice. I would be named Gatorade Player of the Year. I was fortunate to be named All-State and picked as the Trenton Times Player of the Year as a freshman.”
Zoe plans on keeping us updated on her recruitment, but in the meantime, one can assume she will continue to keep working.
