Every year a freshman comes out of nowhere and makes her mark on the basketball court. This past season that player was Newark, NJ native, 5’10 Tyonna Bailey of Morris Catholic H.S. The rising sophomore averaged a “double-double” 18 points & 10 rebounds; and for her efforts she was named first team all Morris county. Bailey plays her summer travel ball with NJ Sparks on the EYBL circuit. NYGHGR got a chance to catch up with the star guard over the weekend.
“A great saying is “if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best.” I want to be the best,” So I’m going to continue to prepare myself to compete against the best.” When asked about her favorite moment of her young HS career, the competitor utters : “One of my favorite moments during my high school career was when we beat Villa Walsh Academy in the second round of states. I loved the environment; Our fans were going back and forth with their fans, but it wasn’t for long. Once we got to like a 10-point lead it was pretty quiet over on the Villa Walsh side lol..” The rising star attended Georgetown elite camp last summer. She currently holds scholarship offers from: Seton Hall, Michigan, Tulsa University, San Jose St, Georgetown, Purdue, and Michigan State.
Tyonna plans on keeping us updated on her recruitment, but in the meantime, one can assume she will continue to keep working.
