Bronx, N.Y.- The 8th annual, NYGHoops Super 64 Showcase was held this past weekend in the Bronx section of NYC. The event was divided into two sessions, a morning session which featured middle school players and an afternoon session that was comprised of high school student-athletes. As in years past this event has been a springboard for many of the nation’s top prospects. Below are some of the prospects that caught my eye during camp.
27 Regina Baker 5’7 (PG) Pennsylvania 2027
Baker has the “IT” factor, the south-pawn floor general left no questions unanswered at camp. The New Heights guard gave a nice effort on both ends of the court. She is a three-level scorer, plays at her own pace and appears to always be under control of the situation. In addition, she brings a level of physicality to the game that is rare in today’s game. This time next year she will be a household name.
11 Keiara Sellers 5’3 (PG) New Jersey 2027
This was my first time seeing this young New Heights point guard. Sellers made her presence felt right at the beginning of camp during 3X3 play. The New Jersey guard dropped dimes and created opportunities for herself throughout the segment. As the camp switched to 5 on 5, play, she “turned it up” to other level especially on the defensive side of the ball. For her age, she has a nice understanding of change of pace, change of direction and it appears, at times, she has the ball on a string. In addition, her ability to “break defenders down” and finish at the rim is complimented by her ability to hit the mid range jump shot.
8 Josephine Pinnock 5’7 (PG) New York 2027
No stranger to Josephine or her game. This NYC lead guard can break you down off the bounce or punish you from the perimeter with at lethal trey ball, but what sets her apart from most is her IQ. As a coaches’ daughter her ability to set things and see the “next play” is unique amongst her peers. She will be a name I’m sure you will hear a lot of in the CHSAA for the next few years.
21 Aiyanna Smith 5’10 W/F New York 2028
There was no true post during this session, however this Staten Island (NY) product may have been the “best forward” of this session. The Jersey Gemz, forward played well in the lane area where she displayed good “drop step” foot work, soft hands and the ability to absorb contact. In addition, she showed a nice first step as a “face up” big where she was able to draw fouls on the opposing defender.
9 Jaqueline Edeman 5’9 (W) New Jersey 2027
It did not take long to notice Edeman, at the Super 64 Showcase. Played both facing the basket as well as with her back to it. Long plays bigger than listed size. Nice feel for the game, crafty around the rim and displayed range to the arc. This “We are One” hybrid is a name college coaches should store away.
1 Journey Atkins 5’9 (W) New York 2027
The #super64 was the first time seeing this athletic lefty. She showed the ability to slash and get to the rim with relativity ease especially in transition. Her ability to “keep the defense” honest from the perimeter only made her slashing skill set that more potent. She finished through contact, showed a quick first step, and played with a very good “love for the game” attitude.
17 Nalyah Campbell 5’3 (PG) New York 2027
Athletic, Unselfish combo guard that defensively played the passing lanes well. The Playmaker U guard excelled in transition was crafty around the basket where she finished extremely well going left & right. She excelled in the 3x3 setting.
10 Tali Ben-David 5’08 W/G New York 2027
Throwback type player that did a bit of everything. She can easily go unnoticed to the novice eye. Ben-David brings a level of physicality combined with skill set that reminds you of a Draymond Green type player. You can catch her this winter with her Mo Motions team of Manhattan.
81 Fella Mbacke 5’7 (G) New York 2027
This Riverside Hawks wing guard used her athleticism to get to the paint at will throughout the camp. Coupled with a nice stroke which extended to the arc, she might be someone to “keep an eye” on.
43 Crystal Thomas 4’9 (G) New York 2029
One of the smallest and the youngest players at the Super64, however this Riverside Hawks guard has some skill. This was no more evident as she was able to compete against older and stronger players throughout the day. She was able set her teammates up all the while excelling in the mid range area as well beyond the arc. Her ability to score was fueled by her efficient scorer’s mentality.
29 Mary Ganim 5’6 (PG) Connecticut 2027
Ganim displayed a good feel for the game and was a willing passer throughout the event. She displayed a nice stroke from beyond the arc and middle range area as she was able to “stop & pop” with ease.
